1. Confirm identity and scope
The initial check identifies the applicant’s authority, the product, the intended users, the main category and the market. It also identifies any specialist use that falls outside the standard review scope.
Names and model details are compared across the form and documents. A material mismatch, unresolved relevant recall or missing essential information must be addressed before recognition can be considered.
2. Confirm complete materials
The application is checked for the information needed to review the particular product. When an item is missing or unclear, the request identifies it and explains what is needed.
Complete materials are then accepted for review. This confirmation starts the normal estimate of about two months, and the private status page shows the estimated decision date.
A saved application or completeness confirmation is not an award decision.
3. Consider the evidence
Review examines the applicable criteria and the materials supporting each important point. This includes the stated use and users, instructions, function information, claims and information provided to families.
Evidence should refer to the submitted product and version. Where a report concerns a component or related model, its relevance must be explained. If information remains unclear, a further question may be raised.
Assessment findings are documented against the materials. There is no automatic award generated by completing the form or meeting an elapsed-time target.
4. Issue an authorized decision
An authorized decision-maker considers the assessment and any unresolved essential conditions. Recognition is issued only for the product and scope supported by the application.
An application may be recognized, not selected, found outside scope or withdrawn. Where more information is needed before a decision, the applicant is told what is required. Outcomes and their relevant next steps are recorded privately.
5. Notify the applicant and create recognition
The authorized applicant receives a decision notice and can read it through private access.
For a recognized product, the approved identity is used on the free digital certificate, digital award mark and public NPF registry record. The award year reflects the year the authorized decision is issued.
Supporting reports and private contact details are not published as part of the public record. Optional physical items are handled only through a separate recipient order process.
Understand the review’s limits
The review does not include hands-on product testing, family trials, laboratory testing or clinical evaluation. An applicant’s demonstration or third-party report is considered as submitted evidence, rather than as work performed by NPF.
Recognition applies to the identified product, version and stated scope. It is not a regulatory approval, a guarantee of individual suitability or an endorsement of every product made by the brand.
Safeguards and next steps
Purchase decisions are kept separate from review. Application, assessment and digital recognition are free; ordering a trophy, printed certificate or physical labels cannot affect the result.
Read the criteria when preparing an application. For an existing submission, the timing guide explains each status and how to request private access.
